The Bachelor of Computing course structure is designed to progressively build strong foundational knowledge before allowing students to specialise in their chosen computing discipline. In the first year, students complete a carefully structured set of core units that establish essential programming, security, systems, and cultural awareness skills. Semester one introduces students to fundamental concepts of data security, software engineering principles, programming design, and the integration of Indigenous science and STEM perspectives, ensuring both technical competence and cultural understanding. Semester two strengthens this foundation through data structures and algorithms, Unix and C programming, and a mathematics unit aligned with students’ prior mathematics background, either linear algebra or linear algebra with statistics for engineers. Students also select a discipline-specific option in their first year, choosing from foundations of computer science, cyber security concepts, or requirements engineering, depending on their intended major. From the second year onward, students focus on one of three specialised majors: Computer Science, Cyber Security, or Software Engineering. Each major consists of an integrated sequence of units totalling 400 credit points, allowing students to develop advanced technical expertise, problem-solving abilities, and industry-relevant skills within their chosen field. The third year builds on this specialisation, with content varying according to the selected major and providing deeper engagement with advanced topics, applied projects, and professional practices. The course is structured to ensure that students develop strong analytical thinking, programming proficiency, and an understanding of secure and efficient computing systems. Throughout the program, emphasis is placed on learning core concepts thoroughly before progressing to advanced applications, preparing graduates for high-demand roles in the ICT sector. Curtin University ensures the course remains relevant by periodically reviewing and updating its structure, while protecting students’ ability to complete their degree within the standard timeframe and without additional costs.
