In the first year of the Screen and Media Studies program, students develop a solid foundation through a combination of theoretical knowledge, creative development, and practical filmmaking skills. The theory component includes courses such as Critical Thinking: Screen and Media Theory, which introduces students to key concepts and frameworks for analyzing screen media, and Australian Screen Cultures, which examines the unique history, influence, and cultural significance of film and media in Australia. Creative development is emphasized through courses like Stories on Screen and Episodic Screenwriting, where students learn to craft compelling narratives and develop their storytelling abilities for various screen formats. The production stream provides practical, hands-on experience with courses such as Introduction to Production and Digital Film Editing, allowing students to gain technical skills essential for filmmaking and post-production. Further practical skills are honed through Video and Digital Filmmaking and Mobile Filmmaking courses, where students experiment with different filming techniques and technologies, including shooting with mobile devices to encourage adaptability and creativity.
