In the first year of the program, students are introduced to the core principles of sustainable fashion through a structured, trimester-based curriculum designed to build both creative and technical skills. Trimester 1 begins with Design Process (FSDP1), where students explore the fundamentals of fashion design thinking and concept development. Alongside this, they study Materials & Making (FSMM1), focusing on how materials influence design and sustainability, and Sustainable Fashion Business (SHSFB), which introduces ethical business practices and industry awareness. These units set the groundwork for understanding how sustainability can be integrated into every stage of the fashion process. In Trimester 2, students continue to develop their creative and analytical abilities through Fashion Design: Function (FSDP2), which emphasizes functionality and purpose in garment creation. Fibres, Fabrics and Fabrications (FSMM2) expands on textile knowledge with an emphasis on environmental impact and innovation. The unit History of Fashion Systems provides historical context to global fashion practices, helping students connect past movements to current trends. Creative Foundations (CRFCRFS) also supports students in refining their visual language and creative expression, encouraging experimentation and conceptual development.Trimester 3 brings a more applied focus, starting with Fashion Design: Reinvention, a unit centered on circular design and upcycling practices. Fashion Resourcing and Remaking challenges students to critically consider how materials are sourced and reused within sustainable frameworks. Industry & Enterprise (FSIE2) introduces students to real-world fashion operations and professional practices. At the same time, Creative Foundations (CRFIFOS) and Industry Foundations deepen students’ understanding of collaborative processes and the realities of working within the fashion industry. By the end of the first year, students have gained a comprehensive foundation in sustainable design, materials, business strategy, and creative development, preparing them to move confidently into more advanced stages of the course.
