The Bachelor of Theatre Arts at Collarts is a dynamic, practice-based degree designed to develop confident, versatile, and industry-ready theatre-makers. Across three years, students engage in a balance of studio, practical, and theoretical work, guided by industry professionals who are active as writers, directors, and theatre artists. In the first year, students are introduced to foundational skills in acting, ensemble production, and theatre making, supported by Theatre Studies and Creative Foundations subjects. These core units establish essential knowledge in performance, collaboration, and industry awareness, while the Ensemble Production subject offers an intensive, hands-on experience in staging theatrical work. The second year deepens this learning with a focus on twentieth-century performance practice and Australian theatre. Students explore both writing and directing through dedicated studios, while also participating in a 12-credit Collaborative Project that encourages cross-disciplinary teamwork. Applied Dramaturgy sharpens analytical and storytelling skills, and an elective offers space for personal interest or skill-building. This year emphasizes the development of creative leadership and a strong understanding of collaborative production. In the final year, students explore contemporary issues and innovation in performance. Subjects such as Intimacy, Consent, and Stage Combat prepare students for modern stage demands, while Writing for Screen and Directing for Screen expand their creative toolkit into film and digital media. The Capstone Production provides a significant platform to create, direct, or perform in a fully realised work. Students can choose between an industry placement or a professional portfolio project, both designed to transition them smoothly into the professional world. Throughout the course, collaboration with other creative disciplines fosters industry insight and networks. Graduates emerge with a strong artistic identity, practical experience, and a deep understanding of the theatre-making process across both traditional and contemporary platforms.
