Course Curriculum

Discover how each program is uniquely designed to inspire learning

The Stage Management and Technical Production course at Collarts is structured across three years, with each year divided into three trimesters focusing on theoretical knowledge, practical training, and collaborative experiences. In the first year, students build a foundational understanding through Theatre Studies 1 and 2, alongside practical units like Acting Foundations, Ensemble Production, and Theatre Making. These units help students understand the core elements of performance from both onstage and backstage perspectives. Creative Foundations and Industry Foundations run alongside, equipping students with the critical and creative thinking skills needed in the performing arts industry. In the second year, students engage with more focused studio work in Twentieth Century Practice and Australian Theatre, exploring historical and cultural contexts of performance. Practical units become more specialized, including Stage Management 2 and Technical Production 2, which offer hands-on experience in production coordination, technical operations, and team collaboration. The Collaborative Project allows students to apply their learning in a full-scale production environment. Creative Foundations continue with Applied Dramaturgy, encouraging deeper analytical and interpretive skills. In the third year, the program emphasizes professional readiness and innovation. Studio units explore Intimacy, Consent, and Stage Combat, as well as Performance Innovation, preparing students for modern theatre practices. The Capstone Production is a major highlight, allowing students to lead or support a professional-level production from start to finish. The final year also includes continued training in Technical Production and Stage Management, while students undertake either an Industry Placement or develop a Professional Portfolio as part of their final Creative Foundations unit. Throughout the course, students gain both broad and specialized experience, collaborating across disciplines and building the technical, managerial, and creative skills essential for a successful career in stage management and technical production.
