The Bachelor of Journalism and New Media at Collarts is a two-year full-time program, structured over six trimesters, with a part-time option available. The course combines theoretical learning, practical skills, and industry engagement to prepare students for careers in modern media.In the first year, students establish foundational knowledge across three streams: Communication Contexts, Principles, and Practice. Communication Contexts units such as Media and Society, Journalism Law and Ethics, and Creative Industries provide insights into the social, ethical, and professional frameworks of journalism. Principles courses cover core journalistic skills, including Principles of Journalism, Lifestyle, Fashion and Entertainment Journalism, and Social Media Strategy, while Practice units like Mobile and Digital Journalism, Professional Writing and Editing, and Audio Journalism develop hands-on skills in reporting, storytelling, and content creation. First-year students also complete Creative Foundations, Industry Foundations, and electives to build broader creative and professional capabilities.The second year focuses on advanced study and professional application. Communication Contexts units include Publicity and Public Relations, Community Storytelling and Cultural Impact, and Creative Entrepreneurship, giving students a deeper understanding of audience engagement, societal impact, and media business practices. Principles courses cover specialised areas such as Music, Performance and Screen Journalism, Feature Writing, and the Journalism Capstone Project, allowing students to demonstrate their journalistic expertise through substantial projects. Practice units like Video Journalism and Journalism Capstone Development refine technical and production skills, while Creative Foundations courses, including Documentary Photography & Photojournalism and Multiplatform Storytelling, prepare students to work across multiple media formats. The program culminates with an Industry Placement or Professional Portfolio, giving students real-world experience and a strong portfolio to support career entry in roles such as digital journalist, multimedia reporter, content creator, or communications specialist.
