The Audio Engineering course at Collarts is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the dynamic world of sound production, live audio, and post-production. Throughout the three years of study, students engage with a broad range of practical and theoretical units that cover recording studio techniques, mixing, mastering, and immersive audio technologies such as Dolby Atmos. The first year focuses on foundational skills, including analogue and digital production, basic recording and mixing, and introductory post-production work like short films and location sound. Alongside these practical units, students build a solid creative foundation and gain industry insights. In the second year, students deepen their expertise with expanded production techniques, advanced live sound, and specialized post-production areas such as game audio, television sound, and ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement). This year also introduces the business side of audio through units like acoustics and entrepreneurship, preparing students for real-world challenges. The third year culminates in a capstone project where students apply their skills to contemporary production environments, supported by advanced courses in immersive audio, audiovisual production, and future sound technologies. Throughout the course, live production skills are developed progressively, allowing students to master both digital and analogue systems. The program emphasizes collaboration, encouraging students to work alongside peers from other creative disciplines to enhance their technical and creative abilities. Small class sizes ensure personalized mentorship from industry professionals, and state-of-the-art facilities provide hands-on experience with current industry-standard tools and software. Additionally, the course includes an industry placement or professional portfolio unit, giving students the opportunity to gain practical experience and build networks before graduation. Overall, this course aims to prepare students for a wide range of careers in sound production, from studio engineering and live sound to post-production and immersive audio design.
