Course Curriculum

The Bachelor of Animal Science at Charles Sturt University is a comprehensive four-year degree that prepares students for a wide range of careers involving animal health, welfare, production, and management. The course comprises 256 credit points, including 20 core subjects, one 16-credit point core subject, two compulsory subjects, and eight restricted electives. Core units cover essential knowledge areas such as animal anatomy, genetics, reproduction, nutrition, pharmacology, welfare, and biotechnology. Foundational science units in biology, chemistry, microbiology, and biostatistics support these topics, while subjects like Indigenous health and food environments expand contextual understanding. Students also complete 30 days of extramural workplace learning between Years 1 and 3, providing practical experience prior to their final-year capstone subject, ASC310. In the final year, eligible students may apply for the Honours stream based on academic performance, completion time, and GPA (minimum 4.5), subject to supervisor and project availability. The course structure allows for subject customization through restricted electives across specialized streams such as animal production, equine science, conservation biology, agribusiness, food science, and biomedical sciences. Options include practical and theoretical topics like wildlife management, parasitology, equine nutrition, animal diversity, food microbiology, and agricultural economics.
