The Master of Teaching (Birth to Five Years) offers a flexible and comprehensive pathway for individuals seeking to become qualified early childhood teachers. This program can be studied online as an external student, on campus as an internal student, or through a combination of both modes. Regardless of study mode, all students have access to online learning materials and are encouraged to engage in professional discussions and networks that enhance collaborative learning and reflective practice. The course requires the successful completion of 160 credit points across 16 core units, providing a strong foundation in early childhood education theory, pedagogy, and professional practice. It focuses on key areas such as child development, play-based learning, curriculum design, literacy, numeracy, assessment, and inclusive education. Students will also explore issues related to diversity, Indigenous perspectives, advocacy, and leadership within educational contexts.A significant feature of this program is its professional experience component, which includes 60 days of practical placement. These placements, completed in two stages—EPE500 Professional Experience: Pedagogical Leadership and EPE502 Early Childhood Professional Experience 2—enable students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world early learning environments. This hands-on experience fosters the development of essential teaching skills, classroom management techniques, and leadership capabilities needed to support children’s learning and wellbeing.Core units such as Human Development and Play Pedagogies, Assessment for Learning and Curricula, Early Years Literacy and English, and Mathematics with Young Children are designed to help future educators plan and deliver creative, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate learning experiences. Units like Indigenous Perspectives and Inclusive Practices and Equity, Inclusion, Diversity and Advocacy prepare graduates to engage respectfully with diverse communities and promote equitable learning opportunities for all children.Overall, this program integrates academic rigor with practical experience to prepare graduates for professional registration and successful careers in early childhood education across Australia.
