The Master of Professional Accounting is designed to provide students with the advanced knowledge and skills needed for a successful career in accounting, whether as a public accountant or in a corporate setting. The course combines theoretical and practical learning, ensuring that students gain a deep understanding of accounting principles, auditing, taxation, finance, law, and information systems. It develops the analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving skills essential for modern financial management and professional decision-making. A unique feature of the course is the professional practice component, which includes approximately 300 hours of placement within an organisation over eight to ten weeks. This placement provides practical industry experience and allows students to apply the knowledge gained during their studies in real business settings. Students can choose to complete the Professional Placement Specialisation or select elective units from the MBA program with the approval of the Course Coordinator. The program consists of 160 credit points, including 12 core units such as Accounting Principles, Management Accounting, Corporate Accounting, Auditing, Accounting Theory, and Business Statistics. Depending on their academic performance, students may also undertake the Professional Practice units, which focus on workplace communication, professionalism, and applied experience. The course has undergone several changes over the years to reflect evolving professional and academic standards, such as the replacement of Business Economics with Economics of Sustainability and the discontinuation of older specialisations. Graduates are equipped for professional accreditation and may pursue membership with accounting bodies such as CPA Australia or CAANZ. Overall, the program not only prepares students for advanced accounting roles but also provides a pathway to doctoral studies or senior business management positions.
