The Master of Medical Laboratory Science is a 160-credit point program designed to develop advanced professional knowledge, technical skills, and clinical expertise in diagnostic pathology. The course structure includes 14 core units that integrate theoretical learning with practical laboratory experience across key areas of medical laboratory science. Students explore essential diagnostic disciplines such as haematology, microbiology, clinical chemistry, anatomical pathology, and genomics, ensuring they gain a strong foundation for professional practice in diverse healthcare and research settings.The curriculum includes both advanced-level and foundational units, such as MLS200 Haematology 1, MLS211 Introduction into Clinical Chemistry, and SBI384 Histology and Histochemistry, which establish a comprehensive understanding of laboratory processes and disease mechanisms. Students also study subjects like SBI254 Biotechnology and Genomics, SBI541 Pathophysiology, and HEA527 Research Skills for Health Professionals to strengthen their knowledge of molecular diagnostics, research design, and scientific analysis.Professional readiness is a major focus of the program, with two extended placement units—MLS600 Professional Placement 1 and MLS610 Professional Placement 2—providing significant hands-on experience in real-world laboratory environments. These placements, each worth 20 credit points, allow students to apply their learning in clinical, research, or public health laboratories under the supervision of experienced professionals.Throughout the course, students are supported in building skills in laboratory management, diagnostic interpretation, and evidence-based practice.
