Course Curriculum

Discover how each program is uniquely designed to inspire learning

The Master of Environmental Management at Charles Darwin University is a research-intensive and professionally oriented program designed to equip students with advanced knowledge and skills in natural resource and environmental management. Situated in some of Australia’s most diverse and ecologically significant regions, the course emphasizes both theoretical understanding and practical application, preparing graduates for careers in environmental management, research, and policy development. The program can be completed in two years full-time, with a 1.5-year accelerated pathway available for students with a related undergraduate degree studied in English. Alternative exit points are available after one semester (Graduate Certificate) or two semesters (Graduate Diploma), offering flexibility for students balancing work, study, and personal commitments. The course structure comprises 160 credit points, including 30 credit points of core units, 10 credit points of Specialist Elective A, 40–60 credit points of Specialist Elective B, 40 credit points of electives, and 20–40 credit points of research or professional placement. Core units provide a foundation in ecology, environmental planning, and community engagement for biosecurity and natural resource management. Specialist Elective A allows students to strengthen research, statistics, or analytical skills, while Specialist Elective B provides a broad range of units across livelihoods, natural resources management, spatial science, and professional practice, including field intensives and work-integrated learning opportunities. Elective units enable further customization, drawing from postgraduate offerings across CDU or approved external institutions. The final research or placement component offers two pathways: a research project under academic supervision or a professional experience capstone, allowing students to develop applied skills in real-world contexts. The program’s emphasis on fieldwork, professional engagement, and interdisciplinary approaches ensures graduates are well-prepared to address environmental challenges, work in regional and international contexts, and contribute to sustainable resource management, policy development, and community-focused environmental initiatives. By combining technical expertise with conceptual and applied knowledge, the Master of Environmental Management provides a comprehensive and flexible education that meets the evolving needs of employers and stakeholders in the environmental sector.
