The Graduate Certificate of Infectious Disease Prevention and Control is designed to equip students with foundational knowledge and skills in epidemiology and biostatistics, which are essential for understanding, preventing, and managing infectious diseases. The course is structured to be completed with a total of 40 credit points, comprising both core and elective units. The two compulsory core units, PHM553 Biostatistics and PHM570 Epidemiology and Control of Communicable Diseases, provide students with critical insights into data analysis, disease trends, and methods for controlling communicable diseases. In addition to these core areas, students select two specialist elective units that allow them to tailor their studies according to their interests and career goals. The elective options cover a broad range of public health topics, including Public Health Anthropology, Clinical Trials, Indigenous Health, Health Policy, Sexual and Reproductive Health, Global Health, Health Systems and Planning, and Qualitative Research, among others. These subjects enable students to gain a deeper understanding of the social, ethical, and scientific dimensions of health research and practice. The program is delivered primarily online, providing flexibility for students who may be working professionals, although some units may also be available internally. Upon successful completion, graduates can articulate to advanced qualifications such as the Graduate Diploma or Master of Health Research, or the Graduate Diploma or Master of Public Health, enabling further specialization and professional advancement. The course reflects current developments in the field, incorporating new elective options introduced in 2021 to address emerging global and community health priorities. Overall, this program prepares students for roles in public health, epidemiology, and health research, combining theoretical learning with practical analytical skills essential for addressing infectious disease challenges in diverse populations.
