Course Curriculum

Discover how each program is uniquely designed to inspire learning

The Diploma of Science is a flexible and practical qualification designed to build a strong foundation in scientific knowledge and academic skills while preparing students for further university study or professional upskilling in scientific disciplines. It begins with a common core unit focused on developing the essential academic and practical capabilities needed for success in higher education, such as academic writing, critical reading, research, referencing, teamwork, communication, and digital literacy. This helps students transition smoothly into university study, regardless of their previous experience.Students then select specialist elective units across various scientific fields including biology, chemistry, ecology, physics, mathematics, environmental science, geographic information science, Indigenous environmental management, and statistics. This flexibility allows students to tailor their learning to align with their personal interests, professional goals, or intended study pathways. The Diploma is structured around 80 credit points (cp), consisting of one core unit (10cp) chosen from options such as Language, Literacy and Sustainability, Design and Innovation: Communicating Technology, or Cultural Capabilities. It also includes five specialist elective units (50cp) chosen according to career interests or intended degree progression. Students can focus on one scientific stream such as Chemistry, Ecology, GIS, or combine units across multiple disciplines. Additionally, there are two general elective units (20cp) selected from the available science or university-wide offerings, unless transferring directly into the Bachelor of Environmental Science, where electives are replaced by prescribed units.Students without a prior degree typically begin with Group A units, which are introductory-level subjects designed to support progression into a Bachelor of Science or the Bachelor of Environmental Science, where full first-year credit can be granted. Those with an existing Bachelor’s degree can select from Group B units, which include intermediate and advanced studies in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental and Earth Science, Physics, Mathematics, and General Science.Overall, the Diploma of Science serves as both a standalone qualification for scientific literacy and professional growth and a pathway into higher study. It provides a well-rounded mix of theoretical understanding, analytical thinking, and practical skills essential for success in scientific education and careers.
