The Diploma of Psychology (Counselling) provides students with a strong foundation in the principles of psychology, counselling skills, and trauma assessment and intervention. It is designed for those who are interested in understanding human behaviour and developing the skills necessary to support individuals and communities in need. Through a combination of theoretical learning and practical skill development, the course introduces students to the major areas of psychology and counselling, preparing them for further study or entry-level roles in health and human services.Students complete 80 credit points through a combination of core and specialist elective units. The core units, totaling 60 credit points, offer a broad introduction to health promotion, research skills, intercultural communication, and key psychological principles. Units such as Introduction to Psychology A and B, Introduction to Health Promotion, and Intercultural Sensitivity and Psychological Communication provide students with the knowledge to understand individual and group behaviour across diverse social and cultural contexts.In addition to the core units, students choose two specialist electives totaling 20 credit points. These electives allow students to tailor their learning to specific areas of interest such as counselling, social work, Indigenous studies, or trauma intervention. Options include Counselling Theory and Micro Skills, Traumatology Assessment and Intervention, and Introduction to Human Services, among others.By the end of the program, graduates will have gained a strong academic grounding in psychology along with practical counselling and communication skills applicable to real-world settings. The diploma also provides a clear pathway into the Bachelor of Psychological Science or related higher education qualifications. With its focus on understanding human behaviour, cultural sensitivity, and evidence-based practice, the Diploma of Psychology (Counselling) is an excellent starting point for a career in psychology, counselling, or community services.
