The Diploma of Psychology and Counselling requires the successful completion of 80 credit points, consisting of eight compulsory core units. Each unit is valued at 10 credit points. These units provide students with a strong foundation in psychology, counselling, and human services, equipping them with the essential knowledge and practical skills needed for further study or entry-level work in the health and social support sectors.Students will study subjects such as HSC119 Counselling Theory and Micro Skills, which introduces fundamental counselling techniques and ethical frameworks for effective client interaction, and HSC132 Introduction to Health Promotion, which explores the principles of promoting wellbeing in communities. The psychology units, PSY150 Introduction to Psychology A and PSY151 Introduction to Psychology B, provide a scientific understanding of human behaviour, cognition, and emotion, establishing the groundwork for more advanced psychological studies. In addition, the diploma includes units focused on social and communication skills such as SWK101 Introduction to Human Services and SWK102 Communication Skills, both of which prepare students to work effectively in diverse professional settings. SWK202 Dynamics of Group Work helps develop teamwork and leadership skills through understanding group behaviour and dynamics, which are vital in counselling and community work contexts. The program also includes AOD311 Counselling/Interventions in Alcohol and Other Drugs, which provides practical insights into working with individuals affected by substance use, offering valuable experience in applied counselling strategies.Overall, the Diploma of Psychology and Counselling totals 80 credit points and is structured to ensure students gain a balanced combination of theoretical learning and applied skills.
