The Bachelor of Oral Health Therapy is a comprehensive program designed to prepare students for a professional career as oral health therapists. The degree equips graduates with the knowledge, clinical skills, and professional attributes needed to provide oral health care across a variety of settings, with an emphasis on improving community health outcomes in regional, rural, and remote areas of Australia. Throughout the course, students develop expertise in communication, clinical decision-making, health promotion, and person-centred care. The program also focuses on building leadership qualities, cultural awareness, and social responsibility, ensuring graduates are capable of delivering fair and sustainable oral health services. This 240-credit point program consists entirely of core units that integrate theory with practice. Students study a range of foundational topics such as anatomy, physiology, microbiology, and pharmacology, which underpin their understanding of oral health science. The course progressively introduces clinical and applied learning through units such as Introduction to Oral Health Practice, Applied Skills and Techniques in Oral Health Therapy, and Advanced Oral Health Therapy in Clinical Practice. These units are delivered through simulation blocks and supervised clinical placements in real-world healthcare environments. Students gain hands-on experience in preventive and restorative dental procedures, periodontal care, and oral health education, enabling them to work confidently in diverse clinical contexts.Work Integrated Learning (WIL) is a key component of the degree, allowing students to apply their learning through placements in community, regional, and rural dental clinics across the Northern Territory and other parts of Australia. Placements are arranged by the university through partnerships with health and community organisations, although students are responsible for travel and accommodation costs. By graduation, students are equipped with the professional, scientific, and practical capabilities to promote oral health and deliver high-quality dental care as qualified oral health therapists.
