The Bachelor of Midwifery is a comprehensive and professionally accredited degree that prepares students to become registered midwives in Australia. Offered by Charles Darwin University (CDU), the course provides flexible study options, allowing students to study online or on campus while balancing personal and professional commitments. Online students have access to extensive technical and academic support, a user-friendly online learning platform, and a network of nearly 400 midwifery students across the country. The course equips students with the skills and knowledge to deliver woman-centred, evidence-based care across pregnancy, birth, and postnatal stages, with an emphasis on rural, remote, and First Nations health care. The program requires the completion of 240 credit points, including 230 core units and one specialist elective. Core subjects cover areas such as anatomy and physiology, complex pregnancy and birth, pharmacology, perinatal psychosocial health, and research and evidence-based practice. Students participate in six structured Midwifery Practice units that combine on-campus simulation blocks and clinical placements to build real-world competence. Simulation blocks are compulsory and are held at CDU’s Darwin, Alice Springs, and Sydney campuses. Work Integrated Learning (WIL) placements provide valuable hands-on experience in professional healthcare environments, enabling students to develop practical skills and confidence in midwifery care. Before commencing placements, students must meet all pre-clinical requirements, including proof of immunisation, a Senior First Aid qualification, criminal record checks, working with children clearances, and fitness-to-practice evidence. Course updates from 2025 introduce new anatomy and physiology units (SBI161 and SBI162) to replace earlier versions, while other units have been revised or discontinued to reflect updated professional standards. Upon graduation, students will be eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) and will be well prepared for midwifery practice in a range of healthcare settings across Australia.
