The Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science Honours is a comprehensive program requiring the completion of 320 credit points. It is designed to provide students with the knowledge, technical skills, and practical experience needed to work as medical scientists in diagnostic laboratories and health-related research fields. The degree includes 22 core units totaling 240 credit points that cover a wide range of topics such as anatomy and physiology, microbiology, biochemistry, immunology, molecular biology, histology, and transfusion medicine. Students will also complete two major laboratory placements, where they apply theoretical learning to real-world clinical settings, gaining essential hands-on experience in areas like haematology, clinical chemistry, and microbiology. These placements, MLS401 and MLS402, each worth 20 credit points, help students build professional confidence and prepare for industry demands. In addition to the core units, students must complete 80 credit points from specialist electives, selecting one of two options: the Professional Research Project or the Professional Practice Experience. The research project option is available to students with a grade point average above 5.0 and includes research design, a professional practice unit, and two extended research components that develop advanced analytical and scientific skills. The professional practice stream focuses on workplace readiness and includes advanced laboratory placement, molecular pathology, applied immunology, and leadership units, emphasizing executive management and workforce development. This degree integrates academic learning with professional practice and research, preparing graduates for careers in diagnostic pathology, biotechnology, and public health laboratories. It also offers a pathway for further study in medical research and advanced laboratory science. As of 2026, the course includes an updated leadership component, with the unit Executive Leadership replacing Resilience Management and Leadership, reflecting a focus on modern professional competencies required in healthcare and scientific environments.
