The Bachelor of Humanitarian Aid and Development provides an in-depth understanding of social work, psychology, sociology, community work, project management, and social policy while preparing students for professional roles in humanitarian and development sectors. The course combines theory and practice, focusing on working with individuals, groups, and communities, particularly in remote and regional contexts. Students develop practical skills in legal and ethical issues, community development, and direct service delivery, gaining the ability to respond to complex humanitarian challenges. Those who choose to complete the Community Work Australia (CWA), formerly the Australian Community Workers Association (ACWA), accredited Human Services major will undertake two professional placements in their third year, providing valuable field experience in community or humanitarian organisations.The course consists of 240 credit points, including 15 core units covering areas such as disaster response, humanitarian aid, Indigenous studies, sociology, psychology, project management, and intercultural practice. Specialist electives allow students to focus on areas such as human services, Indigenous engagement, humanitarian practice, or development work. The Human Services major includes subjects like communication skills, community safety, and professional practice placements, ensuring graduates meet CWA accreditation requirements. Students can also enhance their skills by choosing electives in global sociology, international relations, cultural studies, or peacebuilding.This program emphasises applied learning through community-based placements and Work Integrated Learning (WIL), allowing students to engage directly with humanitarian, community, and development agencies. Graduates are equipped with the expertise to work across diverse contexts, including disaster relief, community development, and human services, both locally and internationally. The degree prepares students for roles in government agencies, NGOs, and international aid organisations, contributing to efforts that address poverty, inequality, and social justice on a global scale.
