The Bachelor of Engineering Science at Charles Darwin University includes twelve weeks of mandatory industrial work experience, helping students gain exposure to current engineering practices and build valuable professional networks. The course is available online or on campus, providing flexibility for domestic students who are unable to attend in person, although reliable internet access is required for distance study. To complete the program, students must successfully complete 240 credit points, consisting of 140 credit points of core units, 80 credit points from one of the specialist engineering streams, and 20 credit points of electives chosen from undergraduate units across the university. Core studies include essential subjects such as mathematics, physics, design, project management, safety, professional practice and a major final-year research and design project. Specialist units allow students to focus on civil and structural engineering, electrical and electronics engineering, or mechanical engineering, with each stream offering practical and theoretical knowledge relevant to industry expectations. Course rules ensure students complete no more than 100 credit points at the introductory level and at least 60 credit points at the advanced 300 level or higher. Over several academic years, the course structure has been updated to improve learning outcomes and maintain alignment with evolving engineering standards, such as the addition of new core units, updated specialist units, credit point adjustments, and the removal of discontinued programs like chemical engineering. Transitional arrangements are in place to ensure continuing students are not disadvantaged, with unit substitutions and credit recognition provided based on previous progress. Through these structured requirements and continuous improvements, the program supports students in developing strong engineering knowledge, practical capabilities, and a smooth transition into either employment as an engineering technologist or further study through the Master of Engineering pathway to achieve professional engineer status.
