The Bachelor of Biomedical Science requires the successful completion of 240 credit points and is designed to give students a strong foundation in the biological and health sciences while allowing them to tailor their studies to their professional interests. The course combines core scientific learning with specialist and general elective options, ensuring a balance between theoretical understanding, laboratory practice, and real-world application. Students complete 12 compulsory core units worth 120 credit points, covering key areas such as cell biology, anatomy and physiology, chemistry, biochemistry, epidemiology, and research methodology. These core units also explore vital aspects of public, Indigenous, rural, and global health, providing a well-rounded perspective on healthcare and its challenges. In addition to the core studies, students complete 80 credit points of specialist elective units from one of four areas—Medical Science, Microbiology, Pharmaceutical Science, or Health. These specialisations offer focused study in disciplines such as immunology, molecular biology, pharmacology, and clinical chemistry, supported by practical laboratory classes that build technical and analytical skills. Students who prefer a broader approach can select a customised combination of units across multiple specialisations. The program also includes 40 credit points of general electives, allowing students to expand their studies beyond biomedical science and explore interdisciplinary fields offered across the university. The course is structured to ensure academic depth and progression, with no more than 100 credit points allowed at the introductory (100) level and at least 60 credit points required at the advanced (300) level. Flexible study options, including part-time and online delivery, enable students to balance their learning with other commitments. Overall, the Bachelor of Biomedical Science provides a comprehensive and adaptable pathway into careers in healthcare, laboratory science, research, pharmaceuticals, and public health, or further postgraduate study in medicine and related disciplines.
