The Associate Degree of Laws is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in legal studies and prepare them for advanced studies or entry-level roles within the legal and justice sectors. The program offers flexibility for both internal and external students, with external learners gaining access to live online tutorials and recorded lectures that allow them to study from any location. To successfully complete the course, students must achieve a total of 160 credit points, with each unit valued at 10 credit points. The course structure includes five core units worth 50 credit points, which cover key areas such as Criminal Law, Legal Process, Torts, Contracts, and Constitutional Law. In addition to the core units, students must complete eight specialist elective units totaling 80 credit points, chosen from a wide range of law-related topics such as Environmental and Planning Law, Family Law, Human Rights Law, Public International Law, and Corporations Law. At least 50 credit points must be taken at the 200 level or above to ensure advanced learning. Students are also required to complete three general elective units totaling 30 credit points, which may be selected from undergraduate courses offered across the university. Learners planning to continue into the Bachelor of Laws should note that only LWA or LWZ coded units can be credited toward that degree. The course requires a minimum of 60 credit points from 200-level units or higher and adheres to the Higher Education Course Rules. Over time, several transitional changes have been implemented, such as the reduction of core units, the reclassification of Comparative Legal Systems, and the discontinuation of certain subjects. These updates ensure the course remains relevant, academically rigorous, and aligned with evolving legal education standards while maintaining a pathway into higher-level law qualifications.
