The Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (Honours) requires the completion of 30 units, totaling 192 credits, with a core structure covering all essential aspects of laboratory medicine. Students begin with foundational units such as Human Anatomy and Physiology 1 and 2, Atoms, Molecules and Matter, Microbiology, and Foundations of Biochemistry. These provide a solid base in human biology, chemistry, and microbiology, supported by practical learning through residential schools.As the program progresses, students engage with specialised subjects including Foundations of Immunology, Molecular Cell Biology, Clinical Biochemistry, Medical Microbiology 1 and 2, Applied Pathophysiology, and Histological and Cytological Techniques. These units build technical expertise in areas crucial for diagnostic laboratory work. Work Integrated Learning opportunities further enhance practical skills by placing students in professional settings where they gain real-world experience.The advanced stages of the course include Applied Immunology, Advanced Haematology, Pharmacology, Advanced Histopathology and Cytopathology, Advanced Clinical Biochemistry, and Advanced Transfusion Science. These units deepen technical knowledge and introduce complex diagnostic procedures required in modern laboratory medicine. Advanced Work Integrated Learning allows students to refine these skills in professional practice.In the final year, students complete Medical Science Research 1 and 2, alongside Integrated Pathology 1 and 2, Preparation for Professional Practice in Medical Laboratory Science, and Specialised Work Integrated Learning. These capstone experiences consolidate their learning, develop research and problem-solving abilities, and prepare them for professional registration and employment.This structured program ensures graduates are highly skilled in diagnostic testing, clinical decision-making, and laboratory operations, ready to pursue careers as medical laboratory scientists in hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, and research institutions.
