Course Curriculum

The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is a research-based degree structured around the successful completion and examination of a substantial thesis. Candidates, whether studying full-time or part-time, are enrolled in two core units that span the entirety of their candidature. The first of these, MPHL61000 Master of Philosophy Thesis, represents the main body of research work, with candidates remaining continuously enrolled in this unit while undertaking their independent study, data collection, and thesis preparation. Once the thesis has been submitted, candidates then enrol in MPHL62000 Master of Philosophy Thesis – Under Examination, which formally covers the period during which their work undergoes the review and assessment process. This structure provides clarity and continuity, ensuring that the focus of the MPhil remains firmly on the production of high-quality, original research.The course is designed with flexible timelines to accommodate different student needs. The minimum length of candidature is one year of full-time study, though this may extend for part-time students depending on their individual circumstances. The expected timeframe for most candidates is one and a half years full-time (or the part-time equivalent), which provides sufficient opportunity to carry out sustained research, engage with supervisors, and develop a well-crafted thesis. However, recognising the challenges of extended research projects, the program allows a maximum candidature of two years full-time (or the equivalent duration part-time), giving students additional scope to complete their work if needed.This timeline ensures that candidates are supported in progressing steadily through their research while maintaining a clear structure and endpoint. Combined with ongoing supervision and training, the course design encourages the development of advanced scholarly skills, independence, and academic discipline, culminating in the submission of a 40,000–50,000 word thesis (or equivalent exegesis). In this way, the MPhil provides a focused yet flexible pathway for graduates to build research expertise and prepare for future doctoral study or professional research roles.
