Course Curriculum

The Graduate Certificate of Human Services at ACAP University College is a postgraduate program consisting of four core level 500 units. It is designed to be completed over 26 weeks full-time or up to two years part-time. The course provides students with essential knowledge and skills to enter or advance within the human services and social work sectors, with a particular focus on the Australian context. The unit Australian Society explores key contemporary issues within Australian communities and how they relate to human services. Academic and Professional Communication Skills develops students' written and verbal communication abilities, which are crucial for effective professional practice. Sociology for Human Service Professionals introduces important sociological concepts and how they apply to understanding social issues and client needs within the human services field. The unit Indigenous Australians and Human Services provides insight into the diverse social, cultural, and political situations experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and prepares students to work respectfully and effectively in cross-cultural contexts. Each unit involves 36 hours of face-to-face workshops, offering students an interactive and practical learning experience. The course equips graduates with the foundational knowledge required to engage thoughtfully and effectively with clients, communities, and service systems. It is particularly valuable for those seeking to begin a career in human services or as a pathway into further study, such as a degree in social work. However, this course is not offered as a stand-alone qualification for international students. Graduates of the program will be prepared to apply their knowledge and communication skills across various roles within the human services sector.
