The Bachelor of Psychological Science and Counselling at ACAP University College is a structured three-year full-time degree, or up to eight years part-time, consisting of 24 core units spread across levels 100, 200, and 300. The course integrates psychological theory with practical counselling training, providing a strong academic and applied foundation for careers in mental health, community services, and counselling. In the first year, students study key units such as Foundational Psychological Processes, Psychology: History, Science and Application 1, and Counselling Skills Training 1. These are complemented by units focused on self-care, counselling theory, and understanding professional roles in society. The second year builds on this foundation with more advanced content including cognition, lifespan development, biological bases of behaviour, and specialised counselling subjects such as grief and loss, trauma-informed counselling, group work, and intermediate counselling skills. This stage enhances students’ understanding of human behaviour while deepening their ability to engage in effective therapeutic practice. In the final year, the focus shifts to professional integration, research, and hands-on experience. Students complete advanced psychology topics like Abnormal Psychology and Intervention, Individual Differences and Assessment, and Social & Community Psychology. They also engage in Contemporary Counselling Orientations and Research, and complete Counselling Skills Training 3. A key component of the third year is the inclusion of two work placement units—totalling 200 hours—where students apply their learning in real-world settings under supervision. This practical experience is essential for developing confidence, competence, and professional readiness. The curriculum ensures graduates are equipped with both the academic grounding and the applied skills needed to work in diverse mental health and counselling environments. The course also lays the groundwork for further study toward registration as a psychologist or advanced counselling qualifications.
