Course Curriculum

The Bachelor of Counselling at ACAP University College is structured to provide a comprehensive education in counselling, consisting of 24 units divided across three levels: 100, 200, and 300. The course is designed to be completed in three years full-time, with the option to study part-time over up to eight years. Throughout the program, students develop foundational and advanced skills in counselling through a mix of core and elective units. In the first year, students are introduced to key concepts such as mental health and wellness, counselling theory, trauma-informed practice, and essential counselling skills. They also explore broader topics like professional reflection, personal sustainability, and the role of professions in society. In the second year, the curriculum deepens to include specialised areas such as neuroscience, lifespan development, grief and loss, group work counselling, and more advanced counselling techniques. This stage also includes service learning to help prepare students for industry engagement. In the final year, students focus on integrating theory with real-world practice. They explore contemporary counselling orientations, work with children and youth, and complete two supervised work placements totaling 200 hours. These placements are crucial for applying counselling skills in real-life settings and gaining professional experience. Elective units allow for some flexibility to explore areas of personal or professional interest. The structure of the course ensures a balance of theoretical knowledge, reflective practice, and hands-on experience, making graduates well-prepared for counselling roles in a variety of settings.
