The first year of the Bachelor of Information Technology at ACU is designed to build a strong foundation in both technical and professional skills, preparing students for more advanced study in information technology and related fields. In the first semester, students are introduced to the fundamentals of managing people and organisations, which provides essential insights into workplace dynamics, leadership, and organisational behaviour. Alongside this, the curriculum includes Fundamentals of Information Technology, which equips students with core technical knowledge and problem-solving skills essential for understanding IT systems, and Python Fundamentals for Data Science, which introduces programming concepts and practical coding skills critical for data analysis and computational thinking. Academic Literacy in Business and Information Technology supports students in developing essential academic skills, including research, writing, and critical thinking, ensuring they are well-prepared for tertiary study and professional communication in IT contexts. In the second semester, students continue to develop their technical expertise with units such as Information Technology in Action, which emphasizes practical applications of IT in real-world scenarios, and Introduction to Cyber Security, which lays the groundwork for understanding security principles, risk management, and ethical considerations in technology. Data and Information Management further builds technical skills in handling, analysing, and organising data, a core competency in modern IT roles. Programming Concepts reinforces coding and problem-solving abilities, preparing students to tackle increasingly complex computational challenges. Together, these units provide a balanced combination of technical knowledge, practical skills, and professional development, ensuring that students gain a comprehensive understanding of IT fundamentals while also cultivating critical thinking, analytical abilities, and workplace-ready skills. This first-year curriculum serves as a strong foundation for students to progress into advanced IT topics, cybersecurity, data analytics, software development, and project-based learning in subsequent years, ultimately preparing graduates for successful careers in the dynamic and rapidly evolving technology sector.
