Course Curriculum

The Diploma in Criminology at ACU provides a focused introduction to the study of crime, law, and social justice, equipping students with foundational knowledge and skills to progress into the Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice or to gain a standalone qualification. Over one year of full-time study, students explore key areas such as criminology, criminal justice systems, public law, juvenile justice, violent crime, and human rights, with a particular emphasis on Indigenous perspectives. The curriculum is designed to develop critical thinking, research skills, and analytical abilities through units like Academic Literacy in Law and Criminology and Introduction to Research for Law, Human Rights and Criminal Justice Studies, which prepare students for higher-level study. Students also engage with practical and contemporary issues in the criminal justice sector, examining the causes and societal impact of crime, the workings of legal frameworks, and policies designed to protect communities. Units such as Introduction to Criminology, Violent Crime and Society, and Public Law for Criminology and Human Rights Studies allow students to develop a strong understanding of legal and social processes, while units like Juvenile Justice and Human Rights and Indigenous People provide insight into vulnerable populations and the principles of equity and social justice. The program is tailored to support students who are new to tertiary study, offering smaller class sizes, personalised academic guidance, and access to student services to build confidence and competence. Upon successful completion, graduates can articulate directly into the second year of the Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice or enter the workforce with a solid foundation in criminology, research, and legal principles. Overall, the Diploma equips students with the knowledge, skills, and practical understanding necessary to pursue further study or begin a career in law enforcement, corrections, policy, community services, or related fields, fostering both academic growth and professional readiness.
