The Bachelor of Nutrition Science (Honours) at ACU is a one-year, full-time program designed for students who have already completed an undergraduate degree in nutrition, food science, or a related discipline. This honours program offers an opportunity to extend existing knowledge, develop advanced research skills, and contribute to the field through an original, independent research project. It is particularly suited to students aiming for careers in research, policy, public health, or postgraduate study. The program begins with coursework units that provide essential training in research methodologies and scientific communication. Students study research methods in biomedical and health sciences, including both qualitative and quantitative approaches, as well as statistical techniques tailored to nutrition and health research. Coursework emphasizes the ethical design, conduct, and analysis of research, ensuring students understand best practices in evidence-based investigation. Units in communicating research help students develop skills in presenting scientific findings clearly and professionally to academic, industry, or public audiences.Following the coursework, students undertake a substantial research project in the form of an honours thesis. The thesis is completed over two ACU terms and is conducted under the supervision of academic staff or industry professionals with expertise in nutrition or related fields. This independent project enables students to apply theoretical knowledge to practical problems, generate original insights, and contribute to advancing the discipline. Students develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and professional communication skills, preparing them for research, leadership, or clinical roles in nutrition science and allied industries.Completing the honours year provides graduates with a competitive advantage over candidates holding only an undergraduate degree. It positions them for high-level roles in research, public health, nutrition policy, and further postgraduate study. Honours scholarships are available to suitably qualified students, supporting high-achieving candidates in pursuing research excellence and professional development within the nutrition and food science sector.
