The Bachelor of Computer Science at ACU provides a comprehensive and structured pathway for students to develop both technical expertise and professional skills necessary for a successful career in the rapidly evolving technology sector. In the first year, students establish a strong foundation in computing and mathematics, beginning with units such as Computing and Society: Foundations of Ethical Innovation, which introduces the ethical and social dimensions of technology, Python Fundamentals for Data Science for practical programming skills, and Introduction to Logic and Algebra to strengthen mathematical reasoning. In the second semester, students continue developing programming proficiency and analytical thinking through Data Structures and Algorithms, The IT Professional, and Differential and Integral Calculus, while also completing a Core Curriculum unit to broaden general knowledge and critical thinking skills. The second year focuses on more specialised and applied topics, including Data and Information Management, Introduction to Cyber Security, Programming Concepts, and Business Data Analysis in the first semester, providing both technical and analytical skills relevant to real-world computing. In the second semester, students study Operating Systems, Computer Networks, and Introduction to Data Science and Machine Learning, complemented by a Community Engagement unit that enables practical application of computing knowledge in professional contexts. The third year prepares students for advanced study and professional readiness with Cloud Computing, the Information Technology Project Part A in Project Management, and a second Core Curriculum unit in the first semester. The final semester integrates Network Security and Applications and Information Technology Project Part B in Software Engineering, allowing students to consolidate their technical skills, manage complex IT projects, and demonstrate practical solutions. Across the three years, the curriculum balances foundational knowledge, specialised technical skills, ethical understanding, and professional engagement, ensuring graduates are well-equipped for high-growth roles in software development, cybersecurity, cloud computing, data science, and other emerging technology fields.
