The Diploma of Film at AIT is a practical, hands-on program designed to immerse students in the world of filmmaking from day one. In the first trimester, students begin by exploring the core components of film production through subjects like Film Mechanics Lab, Screen Evolution, and Visual Storytelling. They engage in writing, producing, and editing short films while gaining introductory experience with camera operation, audio, lighting, green screen, and video editing. Alongside practical training, they explore the history, language, and evolution of film and animation, learning how to visually plan stories using tools such as storyboards, animatics, and scriptwriting. In the second trimester, the focus shifts toward refining both technical and creative skills. Students gain foundational experience in digital image creation and film editing through Image Design, where they learn editing software, compositing techniques, and visual enhancement processes like colour correction and layering. The Art of Cinematography teaches students to shoot high-quality scenes using advanced camera and lighting techniques, while Screenwriting develops storytelling depth through character building, scene structure, and plot development. Each subject emphasizes real-world production practices, creative problem-solving, and collaboration. Students work to professional briefs, present their work, and incorporate feedback in a way that mirrors industry expectations. In the third trimester (Produce), students are expected to synthesize all learned skills in the production of a capstone project, typically a complete short film or media piece, where they apply everything from concept development and scripting to filming, editing, and final delivery. Graduates leave with a polished portfolio, strong technical expertise, and a comprehensive understanding of film production workflows. The diploma equips students for entry-level roles in the film and media industries or to pursue further study, offering a dynamic launchpad into creative and professional filmmaking.
